Review
Ven Voisey, who used to go by the enigmatic moniker v.v., uses field recordings for the basis of his sound art. The six short pieces on 8L are recomposed manipulations of recordings made from a city apartment (guess what number hangs on the door), but you will have a hard time determining what it is exactly that you hear, even if your life depends on it. It's even unclear whether the sound material comes from the street or from within the appartment. And as you debate the nature of these sounds, Voisey uses them in a way that makes this debate pointless. His music, here a soundscape, there more of a sculpture, stands as an enigma as unexplainable as the monolith in Arthur C. Clarke's novel 2001: A Space Odyssey. You either ignore or embrace it. The last piece lets the feeling of street traffic briefly ooze in. It stands as a highlight not because of that but because of the granular deconstruction of the sounds and the abrupt, startling ending. 8L was released on the French Naninani corporation label in a limited run as an enhanced CD-R. ~ François Couture, Rovi| 8II: Infinite Love [Video/DVD] (2002 Album by Masque) | |
