Persian scholar Al-Farabi (a.k.a. Alfarabicus) [b Wasij, near Faraābī (Turkistan), 870, d. Damascus, Syria, 950] flourishes, writing perhaps 117 books on logic, metaphysics, medicine, music, and fundamental principles in science. Because he reconciles the works of Aristotle to Islam, he is accorded the title "the Second Teacher" -- Aristotle being the first. See also 350 bce Astronomy; 1156 Earth science.
