Review

Vezérkar is a Hungarian group headed by human rights activist Benito von Gruenau. 96M Album is a songwriting and recording collaboration between Vezérkar and the Shanes from Germany. Many of the tracks from this album are re-recorded versions of the tracks found on the Shanes' Budapest Sessions performed in their unique punk-polka style with accordion, fiddle, and banjo accompanying the gruff Shane MacGowan-esque vocals. While von Gruenau and members of Vezérkar perform on several tracks, this is still essentially a Shanes album; and since Budapest Sessions is difficult to obtain, this Hungarian pressing is a perfectly suitable alternative. Standout tracks are "Nastrowje," "Pokoljaras," "Polska," and von Gruenau's "Gyere Majd Velem!": aggressive acoustic punk tunes incorporating gypsy and European folk elements, as well as "Don't Stop Rambling," a Shanes song done in true mid-'80s Pogues fashion. ~ Dave Sleger, Rovi
