In China, Qiao Wei-Yao, concerned about the amount of stealing taking place as boats are hauled over spillways, invents the lock for canals. Previously, boats frequently broke up as they were being hauled; people waiting for just such a moment would dash into the wreckage and steal as much cargo as possible.
