As far as I can figure, Netgear is a company which produces
network hardware and software.
I have a home server operating on my Local Area Network (LAN).
To make this work, you must first have a computer with a usable
operating system. Linux usually works best.
Depending on what you want the server to be used for, you can
install various pieces of software to do each task.
If you want a server for the sole purpose of storing files, you
might want to consider using a network hard-drive. Seagate makes
units for this. Simply plug the drive into the router, access the
network from your computer, and locate the network drive.
Very little configuration of the network is required, as any
computer should be able to access any other computer on your LAN.
Checking your router settings will help you determine the IP on
your network. Depending on the router, you may find it on
192.168.0.1, however this may vary depending on hardware and the
software settings for the unit.
To make this server available for web hosting, you should first
get a Cloudflare account, which is free, and if you own a domain,
set it up to point to your home IP address. You should have a
static IP, since dynamic IP addresses make hosting very
difficult.
Once pointed to your home IP, configure your router to forward
HTTP traffic and whatever other traffic you may be hosting to the
local IP of your server.
HTTP is on port 80, FTP is 21, email is on 993, 465, 25, and
some others as well.
Wikipedia has a list of ports and their general uses.
