This album offers the listener a superb collection of 15th to 17th century sacred Christmas music. The melodies of the Camerata and the voices of the Schola Cantorum of Boston regale us with the Midnight Mass of Charpentier, his Noels for instruments, the short, jewel-like antiphon "Hodie Christus Natus Est," psalms and motets of Monteverdi, a cantata of Purcell, and other selections. The polyphonic church music is accompanied by the soft woodwinds of flute and recorder, violin, viola da gamba, and organ.
