Review

A Deeper Kind of Slumber moves Tiamat even farther away from traditional heavy metal, with synthesizers dominating the arrangements and Johan Edlund doing completely away with metal growling in favor of an unearthly croon. Although it's not very metallic, the music is quite heavy in its own way, creating a numb, sleepy ambience that feels both introverted and resignedly pessimistic; perhaps this is due to Edlund's conceiving the album at home with little outside input, and his relationship difficulties at the time. A Deeper Kind of Slumber is perhaps a cut below Wildhoney in terms of consistent listenability, but Tiamat certainly cannot be accused of refusing to develop or experiment. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

A Deeper Kind of Slumber is the 1997 Century Media Records release by Swedish band Tiamat.

Featuring female background vocals by Birgit Zacher (Moonspell, Angel Dust) and traits of experimental (psychedelic rock, progressive rock, jazz fusion, industrial rock, Middle Eastern acoustics as well as Classical and Symphonic rock), the album marked the group's first complete withdrawal from both death metal and traditional heavy metal, following their 1994 release, Wildhoney. It was also the first production after their relocation to Germany, and was written almost entirely by founder/lead songwriter Johan Edlund. Much of the music had reflected on Edlund's personal problems dealing with drugs, creative differences within the band as well as an interpersonal relationship.

It was produced by both Edlund and Dirk Draeger.
