Plot

D.W. Griffith's A Fair Exchange was a loose adaptation of George Eliot's Silas Marner. Banished from his village on a trumped-up criminal charge, a young man metamorphoses into a nasty old miser. When it becomes common knowledge that the miser has a fortune squirreled away in his tiny hut, he becomes easy prey for a pair of robbers. Enraged that he has lost his life's savings to the bandits, the miser's tirade is interrupted when he meets a raggedy little orphan girl. Realizing that she is even worse off than he, the now-contrite miser adopts the child, considering her presence a "fair exchange" for his lost riches. Though set in 18th-century England, A Fair Exchange was filmed in Cuddebackville, New York. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
