Review

Many think of joyless lo-fi noise when they think of indie pop, but here are nine bands from New York, Connecticut, Washington D.C., and England that are as in love with the delicacy of melody and sweet sound as they are with immediacy and edge. From the fragile swan voice of the Shapiros' Pam Berry (ex-Black Tambourine and others) to the equally melancholic Saturnine to the fresh-faced gee-whiz Pullover to the dense clunk-chunk of Sunhead (now Ladybug Transistor, who are also here) and Her Tears, what holds this disparate cluster of fans bans (who cover Nick Drake and 14 Iced Bears!) together is an obvious delight in a sonorous song to sing, a tune to tickle and tease, and a voluptuous vocal. Consistently enjoyable sampler! ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi
