Work for speaker and orch. by Copland, comp. 1942. F.p. Cincinnati, May 1942. Spoken words are taken from speeches and letters of Abraham Lincoln. Proposed perf. at Pres. Eisenhower's inauguration, 1953, was banned because of Copland's alleged Communist sympathies. Among those who have appeared as the spkr. are Eleanor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, Henry Fonda, John Gielgud, Katharine Hepburn, Margaret Thatcher, and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.
