Pianist Hampton Hawes (who is joined by bassist Henry Franklin and drummer Michael Carvin) plays a more boppish repertoire on this live set from Copenhagen's legendary Montmartre than he usually did during the era. Hawes swings his way through spirited versions of "Now's the Time," "'Round Midnight" and "Cheryl," performs his "Spanish Way," and welcomes tenor great Dexter Gordon to a rousing version of "Long Tall Dexter" (which is mistitled on the LP as "Dexter's Deck"). Hopefully, this date (along with Live at the Montmartre from the same night) will eventually be combined on a CD set. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
