The a minore ad maius argument denotes an inference from smaller to bigger: In a strictly formulated rule (typically a legal regulation or ban), a more general rule is contained.

The reverse and more universally known argument is a maiore ad minus, which also usually has a broader usage. The meaning of the a maiore ad minus argument is incomparably more general. It pertains to applications of the a fortiori argument.

Example

Example for the a minore ad maius argument:

  • If it is forbidden to ride a bike with one extra passenger, then it is also forbidden to ride a bike with two extra passengers.
