Lawson Russell (Gooding) is a Louisiana-based criminal lawyer who gets disbarred for committing a mistrial. After that, he retires to Key West and decides to write a book about his experience. While working on it, he suffers from a bout of writer's block, but he meets an old man who lets him read his manuscript. However, the old man spontaneously dies, and Russell decides to pass the book as his. The book ends up becoming a huge success, but Russell gets arrested for the real murders of five lawyers mentioned in "his" book. He then finds himself trying to prove his innocence.
Filming began in December 1997, across Key West, Florida, Los Angeles, California, and New Orleans, Louisiana. It was first released in June 1999, and has since been released to DVD.
