1904"A National Art Theatre for America." The record of a symposium is published in the Arena. Denouncing the commercial policy of the Theatrical Syndicate, prominent critics call for the creation of a national theater. This leads to the opening of the New Theatre in New York City in 1909 and a short-lived attempt to establish a national repertory group to produce the best dramas, both American and foreign.
