Review

Like politicians, pop superstars staging a comeback need to be on message, devising a story line and sticking to it from conception to completion. Celine Dion's message is a simple one -- one that would be evident to anybody paying the slightest bit of attention. After a ballyhooed semi-retirement following 1999's semi-collection All the Way -- a retirement where she gave birth and tended to her manager/husband's recovery from cancer -- it was time to begin a new chapter in her life, something made explicit in the title of the comeback, A New Day Has Come. Of course, the new day is the new chapter of Celine's life -- she's still a caring, loving wife and mother, but she's ready to return to music with a vigor, including a three-year stint as the main attraction at Caesars in Las Vegas. Life -- or at least opportunists -- has a way of interfering with even the best-laid plans, and the week A New Day Has Come hit the stores, it was revealed that Dion's husband was the center of a dubious civil lawsuit claiming he raped a woman in Las Vegas in the late '90s, but the delivery of the message was so strong, so well-conceived, that this barely made a dent in the media blitz (no mention of it in a USA Today cover story the day of release, for instance). No matter your musical taste, you have to admire that feat, and to a certain extent you have to admire the construction of this album, as well, since it's about as perfect as it could be. That doesn't mean it's a perfect album, but it does exactly what it should do -- it doesn't deviate from Dion's mainstream audience, yet it dips its toe into modern music, particularly dance, while subtly addressing her status as a working mom (which somehow translates as she's a survivor), while keeping hip ("Nature Boy" at the end was surely included because of its prominence in Baz Luhrmann's pandering swill, Moulin Rouge). It's savvily sequenced, too, with the radio remix of the title track arriving before the original version! It's so carefully assembled that even stumbles like the bizarre "Rain, Tax (It's Inevitable)" wash away without much effort, which is a testament to how well-made this record is. There's really nothing to fault it on, actually -- it's more ambitious than it needs to be, covers more stylistic territory than any other Dion record, while never abandoning the middle-of-the-road; it's a balancing act that nobody since Barbra Streisand has been able to pull off. If there's any problem with the record, it's that the songs just aren't that particularly memorable, even after several spins. The mood shifts effortlessly, it never seems to stay in one place, but it never catches hold, either. Surely, some of these songs will define themselves through repeated plays on the radio, but oddly the lack of memorable songs doesn't hurt A New Day Has Come much at all, since the fact that it succeeds without real songs makes it all the more impressive. That's what staying on message is all about -- delivering the surface and the overall theme without delivering in the details -- and, in 2002, Celine Dion does that better than any of her peers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

The album includes many highlights, like Dion's renditions of Etta James classic, "At Last" and Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy."

Few French accents can be found here too, as Dion recorded "The Greatest Reward," an adaptation of "L'envie d'aimer" from the French musical The Ten Commandments, performed originally by Daniel Lévi. The song was co-written by Pascal Obispo, a popular French singer and composer. Another track called "Ten Days" is an adaptation of a French hit song, "Tomber" by Gérald De Palmas. Dion recorded also a Spanish version of "L'amour existe encore" from her 1991 Dion chante Plamondon album, called "Aún Existe Amor."

The album included two successful singles: the title track and "I'm Alive," featured also in the Stuart Little 2 movie. On "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)," released as the last commercial single, Shania Twain did the background vocals. "At Last" was released as a radio single in the United States only.

"Super Love" was available as a bonus track outside North America.

On April 7, 2002, CBS aired one-hour TV special dedicated to A New Day Has Come. Beside songs from the album, Dion performed two duets: "Emotion/When the Wrong One Loves You Right" with Destiny's Child and "Beauty and the Beast" with Brian McKnight.

For further promotion, Céline Dion joined on May 23, 2002 the VH1 Divas Las Vegas along with Cher, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Anastacia, Dixie Chicks, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks and Whitney Houston. She sang "A New Day Has Come," "I'm Alive," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and a duet with Anastacia on AC/DC song "You Shook Me All Night Long."

On November 18, 2002 A New Day Has Come was released as a special limited edition with bonus DVD, featuring two unreleased audio tracks: "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" and "All Because of You," the music video for "I'm Alive" and a teaser for Dion's Las Vegas show A New Day.... In the U.S., limited edition included longer version of "The Greatest Reward" lasting 4:04, instead of original 3:28. After this re-release the album made a big jump on the charts around the world.

"All Because of You" was later released as "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)" B-side. As well as a ballad version of "Sorry for Love," which is actually the original version of said song, "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" and "Have You Ever Been in Love" were re-included on Dion's next album One Heart. "Have You Ever Been in Love" was then released from that album as a single in 2003.

Céline Dion won an American Music Award for Favorite Artist in the Adult Contemporary category in February 2003.

The track "I Surrender," while not released as a single, has become a popular song choice for contestants on reality TV singing competitions around the world. It has been performed by Kelly Clarkson, Anthony Fedorov and Lil Rounds on American Idol, David Archuleta on Star Search, Craig Sharpe on Canadian Idol, and Lorena Gomez on Operación Triunfo, by Jessica Sanchez ( American Idol season 11 runner-up) on " America's Got Talent" to name a few. In 2004 British singer Nicki French released a dance version of the song. Polish singer Edyta Górniak recorded Polish-language version of this song, called "List." "I Surrender" was also performed by Dion for five years during A New Day..., becoming one of show's highlights.

On January 29, 2008, Legacy Recordings released A New Day Has Come as a new collector's edition with bonus DVD. The CD contains 16 tracks from the North American version of the album (including extended version of "The Greatest Reward") and the DVD features four music videos, and behind the scenes footage from the making of the album and the "A New Day Has Come" video.
