Review

Robin Spielberg is a very popular solo pianist in some musical circles, having put out over a dozen albums that sell well, including sets that celebrate motherhood and the Christmas season. Her melodic renditions of original ballads and classical-oriented themes could be considered new age except that they are a bit more sophisticated and not as repetitious. Meant as soothing music that can be used as music therapy or for thoughtful and romantic backgrounds, Spielberg's playing features her putting plenty of emotion into her melodies while rarely wandering away at all from the themes. But improvisation is besides the point when listening to this beautiful music; very secondary in favor of honest emotions and making what the CD back cover calls "exquisite melodic creations." Some will consider the music on A New Kind of Love to be rather sleepy while others will be stimulated by its sincerity, Spielberg's restrained but impressive technique, and the pretty melodies. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
