Austrian experimental filmmaker Michael Pilz's A Prima Vista represents a self-reflexive documentary portrait in which the director poignantly turns his cameras around to the subject of his own personal life. The film embodies a collage of preproduced materials, such as Pilz's self-portrait documentary from 1969, his debut 16mm film, candidly-shot footage of his children and familial get-togethers, and a ceremony held at a pagoda in Vienna. Pilz approaches the narrative without any predetermined structural ideas, editing together the autonomous sequences in an instinctive, intuitive manner. The film also incorporates key insights from yoga instructor Sree Kumar, the late avant-garde composer John Cage, and South Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
