Review

Fantasy writer Brust took to the studio for this record (produced by Adam Stemple of Boiled in Lead, and featuring members of the Flash Girls, Boiled in Lead, Cats Laughing and others). For the most part, the production can pass for high-quality demo work (not enough time or money to polish things to a shine), while the writing tends to be stronger in the lyrical department than in the compositional area. Brust serves up a decent folksy stew with a few blasts of sarcastic humor, salted with performances from a handful of well-known friends -- the satirical material tends to work better than the more serious material (see Boiled in Lead's The Gypsy for an example of Brust's serious songwriting working well). ~ Steven McDonald, Rovi
