Plot

The story of this Universal drama was simply and realistically told. Ruth (Pauline Bush) lives with her uncle, who runs the only hotel in Maplehurst. She is loved by the hotel clerk (Dick Rosson), but has set her sights higher than the rustic town in which she has grown up. When "the Snob" (Rupert Julian) comes to Maplehurst from the city, Ruth decides to go after him, not realizing that she's getting in way over her head. The Snob takes full advantage of the little country girl while looking down his nose at everyone else. When he goes back East he invites her to come visit, so she runs away from home. A year passes and the Snob, egged on by his father (Murdock MacQuarrie), has cast her aside. Ruth goes to live in a run-down boarding house and bears a child, while the Snob's parents send him out West. With her only choices being prostitution or suicide, Ruth writes home to ask her uncle for help. The faithful clerk reads her letter and sends her money. Shortly thereafter, the uncle dies and leaves the hotel to the clerk, who goes to fetch Ruth. The Snob returns from the West a much better man. He finds Ruth and offers to do right by her, but she refuses, preferring to stay with her humble country sweetheart.
