Review

Steve Miller's happy-go-lucky rock and the mellow sounds of smooth jazz don't seem like the most natural combination. However, this mix works surprisingly well on Smooth Jazz Tribute to the Steve Miller Band, which turns songs like "Swingtown," "Abracadabra" and "The Joker" into breezy smooth jazz confections. Granted, there is a high cheese factor on this kind of tribute album, and for good reason -- the overly slick versions of "Jungle Love" and "Livin' in the USA" end up being more funny than fun. Still, "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Jet Airliner" manage to keep their essential Steve Miller-ness and work well as smooth jazz reveries. Open-minded fans of Miller and smooth jazz alike should enjoy this light-hearted, unusual but mostly successful fusion. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
