A compilation album tied in to the popular British satirical TV show Eurotrash, 1998's A Song for Eurotrash features a mixed bag of performers reinterpreting songs from the ultra-cheesy Eurovision Song Contest. Participants range from a re-formed Bananarama (with, for the first time in a decade, original member Siobhan Fahey) gleefully blasting through Abba's "Waterloo" to Dubstar's electro-skittish version of France Gall's Serge Gainsbourg-penned "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son," with contributions from Brigitte Bardot, Dean Martin, St. Etienne, Edwyn Collins, and even Shane MacGowan to boot. There's an undeniable archness to most of the album which limits its fun value a bit; things are more fun when the singers approach the songs without disdain, as in Terry Hall and Sinead O'Connor's unexpectedly lovely version of the sappy ballad "All Kinds of Everything," which had been Ireland's entry in 1970. Kenickie's terrific version of the Brotherhood of Man's "Save Your Kisses for Me" is another non-smarmy highlight. The listener has to be in a certain mood to enjoy most of A Song for Eurotrash (and some songs can barely be enjoyed at all), but the album certainly has its charms. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
