Review

The title doesn't allude to this collection's emphasis, but make no mistake, A Treasury of Golden Christmas Songs emphasizes black gospel renditions of Christmas favorites. The inclusion of Jerry Butler here on two songs ("Silent Night" and "O Holy Night") gives this album some big-name firepower. For the most part, though, none of the artists here, excluding Butler, are that exceptionally well-known outside of black gospel circles: Caravans, Swan Silverstones, Original Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Gospel Clefs, and Charles Taylor. In fact, Bulter almost seems a bit out of place here, being probably the least gospel of the performers. Still, it's an impressive collection that burrows into the archives for its inclusions and focuses on quality music rather than gimmicks or big-name performers. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
