In August of 2001, promising young singer Aaliyah (full name Aaliyah Dana Haughton) was killed when the small plane carrying her and her crew back to the U.S. from a video shoot in the Bahamas crashed. She was only 22. At the time of her death, Aaliyah had already found stardom as a talented and beautiful pop star, and was making her first forays into acting with a prominent role in Matrix sequels. Given such a sad story, this tribute to the singer is certainly deserved. However, the 12 versions of her songs performed here by the United Talent of R&B (a studio collective that does not feature any name-brand talent) range from middling to decent, and don't offer the listener any additional insight into Aaliyah's music or mystique.
