Review

This Dick Hyman release consists of nine waltzes from a various fields of music, including standards, Broadway show tunes, modal jazz, and classical music. Accompanied by bassist Michael Moore and drummer Ron Traxler, Hyman effortlessly swings his way through all of them. Highlights include the pianist's improvisation of Frederick Delius' Mazurka for a Little Girl, Miles Davis' "All Blues" (during which he works in a playful excerpt of "Holiday for Strings"), and Stephen Sondheim's somewhat obscure "You Must Meet My Wife." His own "Waltzin' Without the 'G'," originally written as the theme to a long forgotten beauty pageant, features a fine solo by Moore. This album has appeared on at least a pair of LP labels and most recently as a Four Star CD, but it is currently out of print and may be somewhat hard to find. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
