The A354 is a primary route in England which runs from Salisbury in Wiltshire to the Isle of Portland in Dorset, a total distance of 51 miles (82 km). From Salisbury the road crosses Cranborne Chase and briefly merges with the A350 at the Blandford Forum bypass before crossing the Dorset Downs and merging with the A35 at the Puddletown bypass. 7 miles (11 km) to the west it splits from the Dorchester bypass and runs south into Weymouth, running alongside Radipole Lake and across a short bridge over Chesil beach onto Portland. For several years a bypass of Upwey has been in the planning stages.

Current Improvements

A bypass of the A354 road is currently under construction, running from the A35 Dorchester Bypass on a new alignment slightly to the east of the current road. The road will be largely single carriageway with extra lanes and left filters provided at roundabouts.

A dual carriageway bypass was first proposed in 1992, but was scrapped by the Labour Government in 1997. The current project aims to relieve the old A354 which is unimproved single carriageway. The route has been dogged for many years by a multitude of issues, including insufficient, too-narrow horizontal alignment that made it difficult for cyclists to negotiate, and a hairpin bend near Upwey that became notorious for accidents.

The coming of the 2012 Olympics to Weymouth has played a major factor in making funding for the road available.

Proposed Improvements

Weymouth Relief Road

A 3.75-mile (6.04 km) road north of Weymouth in Dorset which goes through the Dorset Heaths and Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and irreplaceable ancient woodland owned by the Woodland Trust[1][2]
