Aalavandhan (Tamil: ஆளவந்தான்) is a Indian Tamil Thriller film released in 2001. Directed by Suresh Krishna, it stars Kamal Haasan in a dual role, with Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala as his love interests. The film's soundtrack was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and the background score by late Mahesh Mahadevan. Actor Jayam Ravi served as an assistant director for this film.

This movie was simultaneously released in Telugu and Hindi as Abhay. The film is an adaptation of a novel titled Dayam that was written by Kamal Haasan in 1984.,[2][3]

Plot

Vijay (Kamal Haasan) is the commander of an anti-terrorist squad. He gets engaged to Tejaswini (Raveena Tandon) who is pregnant with their child. Vijay's brother Nandu (also played by Haasan) is psychotic and is in a mental asylum. Vijay takes Tejaswini to the asylum so that Nandu can meet her. In his delusions, Nandu decides that she is his evil stepmother. Nandu, who killed his stepmother when he was twelve, decides that he must kill Tejaswini to protect Vijay.

Nandu escapes from the asylum and searches for Tejaswini. In the process, he takes drugs and kills other people under their influence. Vijay is determined to save his fiancee even if it means that he has to kill his brother.

The soundtrack was composed by music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Hindi lyrics was penned by Javed Akhtar and Tamil by Vairamuthu. The album created record by selling over 2,00,000 copies in less than eight hours of its release.[4]

Distribution

Abhay was bought over in Maharashtra by the reputed Shringar Films who were very excited about its November release. The number of prints in Tamil Nadu had been increased by almost five times the normal number of prints. Also on the anvil was a rise in the ticket rates especially for Aalavandhan.[5]

Box Office

The film was a commercial failure but continued to top the year’s charts grossing $5 million at the box office.[6]
