Au is a form of
Aue 'meadow'. Founded in
c.1250, it was the temporary capital of the Helvetic Republic in 1798. Nearby is the Habichtsburg 'Hawk's Castle', the ancestral residence of the Habsburg family. One of the great dynasties of Europe, the family took its name from a contraction of Habichtsburg.
