Nov 14, 1900. American composer Aaron Copland was born at Brooklyn, NY. Incorporating American folk music and, later, the 12-tone system, he strove to create an American music style that was both popular and artistic. He composed ballets, film scores and orchestral works including Fanfare for the Common Man (1942), Appalachian Spring (1944; for which he won the Pulitzer Prize) and the score for The Heiress (1948; for which he won an Oscar). He died Dec 2, 1990, at North Tarrytown, NY.
