Aaron Marcus, one of the world's first graphic designer to be involved fulltime in computer graphics, founded Aaron Marcus and Associates (AM+A) in August 1982.[1] AM+A is a firm specializing in user-interface development (planning, research, design, implementation, evaluation, documentation, and training) for mobile, Web, desktop, and vehicle applications in consumer and professional products/services. Aaron Marcus lectures around the world on critical issues, best practices, and future trends in user interface design, cross-cultural user experience design, mobile user-interface design trends, and user-centered design process. AM+A serves the mobile, vehicle, finance/wealth management, medical/healthcare, travel, and media industries among others.[2]
AM+A provides user-interface and information-visualization development consulting services for consumer electronics, media, travel, financial, medical/health, and other vertical markets. AM+A operates from Berkeley, California, USA, and involves Associates with backgrounds ranging from cognitive science, software engineering, and cultural anthropology to graphic design and branding. AM+A has served approximately 300 clients and completed approximately 1500 projects. AM+A has won design awards from Axiem, Applied Arts Magazine, Communication Arts Magazine, ID Magazine, The GLAMMIES and the Japanese Sign Design Association.[3]
AM+A design methodology[4] involves analyzing how users of interactive systems accomplish tasks in their contexts and subject-matter expertise and, based on this analysis, developing designs that display and communicate information effectively, efficiently, usefully, and appealingly. AM+A’s goal is to enhance ease-of-learning, ease-of-use, productivity, brand loyalty, and satisfaction. AM+A’s development process includes planning, research, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, and documentation. User interfaces are analyzed and designed with respect to five components and associated criteria:
Metaphors: Easy recognition of terms, images, and concepts
Mental Model: Appropriate organization and representation of data, functions, tasks, and roles
Navigation: Efficient movement within the mental model through menus, dialogue boxes, and control panels
Interaction: Effective input/output sequencing, including feedback
Appearance: Quality perceptual characteristics
AM+A works for both Fortune 500 clients and innovative startups.[5]
Notable projects include helping Apple design the user-interface for AppleLink Personal Edition (which became AOL), HP with the design of the user interface for its Halo telepresence system, Kaiser Permanente improve its online library for physicians and nurses, Sabre revolutionize its graphical user-interface design for one-third of the world’s travel agents, Livescribe with the first version of its SmartPen, and SAP’s with sustainability-oriented enterprise software.
