African Mythology:

Abasi Ibom Interacts with Man within Two Universes

Ibibio/Nigeria

Abasi, the supreme being, the god of the sky and earth, the creator and governor of all, lives above the earth, in the sky or heavens, perhaps in the sun. Abasi Ibom is concerned with great acts—creation, the ordering of the seasons, control of natural phenomena like rain, thunder, and eclipses—and the lesser deities and spirits have to do with more routine human affairs. Through these spirits, man can appeal to Abasi Ibom, the ultimate arbiter, for intervention.

There are two universes, the dominion of God and the domain of man. At the center is man, and his mythic interaction with God occurs at the confluence of those two realms. Man is at the center of a visible, material universe; he is affected by the invisible universe, that of the supreme god and the lesser gods and spirits. There is an interaction of the two universes, man seeking to influence the gods and thereby shape his experience in the visible world, and the spiritual beings motivating man and his affairs.
