Founded as a military garrison in 1853 and named after Major (later Major General Sir) James Abbott, who was deputy commissioner for Hazara and who pacified this area of the North-West Frontier Province between 1849 and 1853. He was one of a band of young officers who distinguished themselves on the Punjab frontier at this time in the service of the English East India Company. To his name has been added ābād to give 'Abbott's Town'.
