Sports Science and Medicine:

abdominal injury

Physical damage to the abdomen and its contents. The abdomen is particularly vulnerable to blows during contact and collision sports. Most blows to the abdomen result in nothing more damaging than winding or superficial bruising, which can be treated easily with the application of an ice pack. A heavy blow to the abdomen may, however, cause a serious injury by rupturing one of the internal organs, the liver and spleen being the organs most commonly affected. Signs of a serious injury vary from mild discomfort to abdominal rigidity and shock. Any persistent abdominal pain, whether or not associated with a blow, may be a symptom of several medical conditions that are potentially fatal if not properly diagnosed and treated. In such cases, medical advice should be sought, no medication or drinks given to the patient, and physical exertion avoided. A penetrating injury can damage internal structures. The wound should be covered, preferably with an antiseptic dressing, and the casualty taken to hospital immediately. If the intestines are protruding, they should not be pushed back into the abdomen, but should be covered in a moist dressing.
