UK (England): derived from the first Anglo-Saxon names, Æbbandun and then Abendone, meaning 'Æbba's Hill' from an Old English personal name and dūn. The town was founded by the Saxons around a Benedictine monastery c.680. When the abbey was moved from the hill to low ground near the River Thames the name went with it.
