Abortion in Panama is currently illegal except in case of the threat to life or health of the woman, or if the pregnancy is the result of rape. In 1982, a penal code was enacted which sustains to this day. The punishment for a woman who has an illegal abortion is 1 to 3 years in prison and the punishment for a doctor or other person who performs the procedure with her consent is 3 to 6 years. If the procedure is done without her consent the punishment is 5 to 10 years.[1]
