Abraham Buford
Buford, Abraham (1820-84) Confederate cavalry officer, born in Woodford County, Kentucky. Buford fought in the Stones River campaign (1862-63) and at the battle of Champion Hill (1863). In March 1864, under Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, Buford commanded a cavalry division and led raids in the spring campaign in western Tennessee and Kentucky; he was praised by Forrest in June 1864, when Forrest routed a Union force double the size of his own. After fighting in John B. Hood's Nashville campaign (1864), Buford was given command of the Confederate cavalry remaining in Alabama (February 1865) and surrendered on May 9 at Gainesville, Alabama.
