He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1839 and soon developed a fashionable style in oil painting, depicting literary genre subjects mostly in 18th-century costumes, for example a Ballroom in the Year 1760 (1848; London, Guildhall A.G.). His preferred subject-matter was anecdotal, including numerous meticulously painted figures.
