[ten ܒbrōōk]

Ten Broeck, Abraham ten ˈbrōōk (1734-1810) Revolutionary War statesman and soldier. Born in Albany, New York, Abraham Ten Broeck was a large land owner and representative in the New York Provincial Assembly at the outbreak of the Revolution. As one of the leading critics of British authority, he assumed an important role in New York's Patriot government. As a brigadier general from 1775 to 1781 he also commanded the Albany County militia. He and his men contributed significantly to the American victory at the Battle of Bemis Heights on October 7, 1777 which sealed the fate of John Burgoyne's trapped British army and compelled its surrender. After the war Ten Broeck served as a judge, state senator, and mayor of Albany.
