Review

On the plus side, Absolutely the Best of Keely Smith is an apt title, considering this compilation does include many of her greatest performances from the late '50s (most without Louis Prima). It sprinkles a few of her hits with Prima ("That Old Black Magic," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "The Lip") amongst some great solo sides: "I Wish You Love," "Stormy Weather," "Young and in Love," and (a collector's nugget) an unreleased master of "I Would Do Most Anything for You." On the minus side, though, 14 tracks is short shrift for a digital-era compilation, and Capitol's Spotlight on Keely Smith remains the best look at one of the late swing era's best vocalists. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
