Biography

Having watched the career of his longtime group, the legendary Candlemass, crumble before him, chief songwriter and bassist Leif Edling sought solace in a new project he named Abstrakt Algebra. Enlisting singer Mats Leven (formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen's band), guitarists Mike Wead (King Diamond, Hexenhaus), Simon Johansson (Fifth Reason, Memory Garden), and drummer Jejo Perkovic to assist him, Edling looked to turn over a new 'leif' (get it?) -- abandoning the slothful doom he'd long been associated with to embrace a faster and quite technical power metal style. The results, heard on the band's 1995's eponymous release were interesting, but not enough to keep Edling from giving Candlemass another shot a few years later, and taking drummer Perkovic with him as well. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Abstrakt Algebra was a Swedish experimental metal band with influences from power metal and doom metal that was founded in 1995 by Leif Edling after the band Candlemass fell apart.

They made one album, but Edling had already started working on a second album with a different line-up. However, due to the commercial failure of Abstrakt Algebra, Edling reformed Candlemass while taking with him some of the ideas for that second album, as well as drummer Jejo Perkovic. There, materialised on the Dactylis Glomerata album. And as such Abstrakt Algebra was over. That second album, called Abstrakt Algebra II, was later included as a bonus disc in the 2008 re-release of Dactylis Glomerata.

Mats Levén later appeared as the singer of the band Krux, another band by Edling, which has a similar take on the experimentation Edling started with Abstrakt Algebra[1][2].
