The first aerial gunship developed for combat support. It grew out of specific needs for a more effective weapon system to defend the strategic hamlets and small forts throughout the countryside in the Vietnam War. It was capable low-altitude cruising and hovering. The more sophisticated AC-119 and AC-130 eventually supplanted it.
