Review

Academy Award Winning Songs (1934-1993) delivers just what the title suggests: six decades' worth of Oscar-winning songs collected over five discs. The collection includes dozens of songs that became pop standards; the first disc alone features Fred Astaire's version of "The Way You Look Tonight," Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memory," Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow," and Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," in addition to Dick Haymes' "It Might as Well Be Spring" and Dick Powell's "Lullaby of Broadway." Art Lund's "Mona Lisa," Doris Day's "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)," Astrud Gilberto's "The Shadow of Your Smile," and B.J. Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head." The set also features instrumental classics like Henry Mancini's "Moon River" and "Days of Wine and Roses," as well as Curtis Mayfield's "Theme From Shaft." Disney favorites including "Chim Chim Cheree," "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," "Under the Sea," and "A Whole New World." Though the later half of the collection contains fewer timeless classics, it does feature plenty of great pop culture artifacts, such as Christopher Cross' "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," Erica Gimple's "Fame," Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life," and Giorgio Moroder's "Flashdance...What a Feeling." Tex Ritter's "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me)," Dusty Springfield's "Windmills of Your Mind," Shirley Bassey's "The Way We Were," and Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy" are more of the many highlights from this expansive set, which documents the changing face of pop music as it traces the history of film's award-winning singles. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
