Plot

Waging war against all things glamorous and beautiful, crippled terrorists Accion Mutante plot a series of attacks on society's elite, gaining a fearsome reputation before their activities are stalled with the jailing of their leader and mastermind, Ramon. Soon reunited with their newly released leader, Accion Mutante plots the elaborate wedding reception kidnapping of Patricia, a wealthy socialite. Though many die in the botched kidnapping, the gang gets away with Patricia and jumps aboard their spaceship, destined for a distant planet and a healthy ransom. Celebration is short-lived as greed kicks in and Ramon plants the seeds of distrust among his fellow mutants shortly after take-off. With all of the mutants gone sans a vengeful Siamese twin (or at least half of him), Ramon takes his cash cow to the pay-off site, though a curious case of the Stockholm syndrome has thrown an unexpected wrench into Ramon's devious plan. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Review

Troma sensibility meets Pedro Almodovar style in this ultraviolent anarchic satire where chaos reins supreme. A bizarre cross between Robocop and Freaks, director Alex DelaIglesia's freshman effort is a scattershot but fast-paced and amusingly goofy farce for those with a strong stomach and affection for low-brow humor. Obsessed with making the world a safe and happy place for the less fortunate in society, a group of likeably dimwitted crippled antiheroes terrorize the trendiest if elitist society. Taking sharp aim at everything from the rampant and blood-lusting sensationalism of the evening news to the brutality that can occur if law enforcement goes unchecked, director DelaIglesia's skills for parody aren't quite as sharp as they would become in his later efforts (Day of the Beast, La Comunidad), though the pacing and sheer energy of the film are enough to keep the laugh/gag reflex from becoming too relaxed. Though this film gained delaIglesia's recognition for his style and audacity, it was Beast that would put the directors name on the map, quickly becoming a midnight movie staple and concreting his outlandishly deviant style with a garnish of abrasive black humor. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Acción mutante is a 1993 Spanish science fiction black comedy film directed by Álex de la Iglesia.

Plot

A future post-apocalyptic world is ruled by the good-looking people. A terrorist group of disabled people, who see themselves as mutants, take arms against their oppressors. They plan to rid the world of "beautiful people" and superficiality. They are very inept at what they do and mistrust one another. They assassinate body builders, massacre an aerobics class on live TV and blow up a sperm bank as part of their violent campaign.

Led by their chief Ramon Yarritu, they kidnap Patricia, the daughter of wealthy businessman Orujo, in the middle of her wedding. The scene becomes a massacre, but they manage to flee with Patricia as their hostage. They staple Patricia's lips together and escape from the police in their spaceship.

Ramon, planning to keep the ransom money for himself, turns the gang members against each other by convincing them there is a traitor. This leads to the deaths of all but one of the terrorists - siamese twin Alex who must drag the dead body of his brother Juan around with him for the rest of the film. They crash on Axturiax, a brutal mining planet inhabited only by crazed, sex-starved miners. Ramon and Patricia, who has developed Stockholm Syndrome, are captured by miners but manage to escape, but not before Patricia is gang-raped. A planned ransom drop by Orujo turns into mayhem, compounded by live TV coverage of the ransom negotiations and leading to an explosive climax.
