Applied to a person who suffers more than the usual number of accidents. An accident is sometimes defined as ‘an injury with no apparent cause’. Each year, thousands of exercisers are injured sufficiently badly to require medical attention. Although athletes subject themselves to more mechanical stresses and strains than sedentary people, most of their so-called accidents are preventable, and are due to lack of fitness, insufficient warm up, poor technique, or lack of skill. The very young and very old are particularly accident-prone—the young because their bones are not fully developed, and the old because their bones are often fragile (see osteoporosis). Sports that impose high impact forces (e.g. distance running), are especially risky for these groups.
