acetoacetate-CoA ligase

EC 6.2.1.16; other name: acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase; an enzyme that catalyses the formation of acetoacetyl-CoA from ATP, acetoacetate, and CoA with release of AMP and pyrophosphate. In bacteria that carboxylate acetone to acetoacetate, it activates the latter for further metabolism. It is also present in animals, but utilization of blood acetoacetate after its entry into tissues involves 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase.
