acetyl L-carnitine

An antioxidant synthesized in the body from L-carnitene. It carries fatty acids across cell membranes, such as those of mitochondria in which it facilitates fatty acid oxidation. It also provides acetyl groups for the synthesis of acetyl coenzyme A. See also alpha lipoic acid, L-carnitine.
