Created as a part of Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for national unity and against discrimination of the Harijan, or untouchables, this film -- directed by Chandulal Shah -- tells of Lakshmi (Gohar), a young woman who fights to overcome her lowly birth. Frustrated by his lack of access to a well designated for Brahmins only, Lakshmi's father converts to Christianity while her mother remains Hindu. Lakshmi is eventually cared for by a wealthy merchant who introduces her to high society. Lakshmi soon befriends Savita, but when both girls fall for the same man, Savita's father gets rid of unwanted competition by sending Lakshmi back to her village of birth. There she falls for fellow Harijan Ramu (Motilal) and together they fight for justice. Though her beau is killed, her friends fall ill, and she is jailed, Lakshmi perseveres and soon the village well is free for all castes. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
