Achille Campanile

(1900–77). Roman playwright, novelist, and journalist . His Futurist theatrical works, such as Centocinquanta la gallina canta (1925), won critical acclaim. But he had more popular success with novels such as Ma che cos'è questo amore? (1927). Both his novels and plays show a passion for nonsense and linguistic ambiguity, although the humour often disguises a strong critique of bourgeois mores. Always a prolific contributor to newspapers and periodicals, Campanile was most active in the postwar period as a television and cinema critic.
