Achilles bursitis

An inflammation of either the deep retrocalcaneal bursa lying between the Achilles tendon and the calcaneus (in which case it is sometimes called retrocalcaneal bursitis), or the superficial bursa lying between the Achilles tendon and the skin (in which case it is sometimes called post-calcaneal bursitis). Retrocalcaneal bursitis is characterized by tenderness and redness involving the posterior and superior aspects of the heel. The symptoms are often absent if the patient goes barefoot. Achilles bursitis is often caused by excessive compensatory pronation.
