1. not readily decolorized by acids after staining; said of bacteria, especially Mycobacterium spp.
2. stain demonstrating this characteristic. See also Ziehl–Neelsen stain.
- modified a.-f. bacteria — resist decolorization by mild acid solutions; includes Brucella and Nocardia.
