Review

This 20-song collection of mid- to heavy-textured acoustic rock would've made a great set on any mid-afternoon show on WNEW-FM or any number of other FM stations of the era. Drawn from a half-dozen labels, it showcases the works of a few one-hit (or one-major-hit) wonders ("Stuck in the Middle with You" by Stealer's Wheel, "Blue Guitar" by Justin Hayward and John Lodge, "After the Goldrush" by Prelude) and other artists, like Gerry Rafferty, Al Stewart, Sutherland Brothers, Racing Cars, and Bourgeois Tagg, whose complete CDs are less alluring to most listeners than their signature tunes. Added to these are the most commercial sides ("Lay Down" by the Strawbs, "Reason to Believe" by Rod Stewart, "Morning Has Broken" by Cat Stevens, "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce, "Castles in the Air" by Don McLean, "Chestnut Mare" by the Byrds) who actually made top-flight albums. It's a good mix of the best of '70s rock, a bit mellow but pleasingly melodic throughout, highlighted by the presence of one true rarity, "Journey" by Duncan Browne. The compilers used the best available masters, which makes this worthwhile on a sonic level as well. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
